NY Equine Drug Lab Clears the Fog in the Racing Industry

August 19, 2025

Doping in the racing world has changed its form in the past decades from conventional drugs and normal amounts to micro-dosing and designer products to avoid detection in standard testing. However, it seems like NYEDTRL will bring an end to the modern form of doping.

Micro-dosing happens when a horse is given a subtle amount of a drug while being administered closely to avoid detection. While this micro-dosing might not show up in scans, it will, over time, improve the racehorse’s performance.

In addition to micro-dosing, designer drugs are slightly chemically modified to make them undetectable in standard testing while still giving the same effect to the horse.

The New York Equine Drug Lab, or NYEDTRL, is now using a new technology, IM-MS, known to be able to detect micro amounts of drugs and scan over 200,000 chemical compounds, while older methods detect around 5,000 compounds. NYEDTRL displays a ray of hope toward a sport where both the horses’ and riders’ welfare are equally important.
